Every once in a while, I get the chance to shoot a wedding that is all about the two persons getting hitched and a little else. This is the first time when I got the opportunity to cover a Tamil wedding! My first wedding photography project outside Bengal! It was a dream that met the charm of reality at the wedding of Sukanya and Siva, where beautiful culture, ceremonies, colourful outfits and lots of fun kept me on my feet for consecutive 2 days.
Sukanya and Siva’s wedding was being held at Sukanya’s hometown, Tiruppur. The richness of tradition was not only in the decor but also in the warmth that the bride and the groom shared. Both families took so much care to make this a grand and traditional affair and it helped to make the venue just amazing. When everything falls in place, one can expect the output to be a great one. These were few of the candid moments that were caught through my Lens!
Weddings down south are very different from those up in the northern part of India. Typical Tamil weddings are more about sticking to the age-old customs and traditions rather than a joint effort to make the wedding a grand affair. For the Tamilians, the spiritual symbols of a wedding lie in paramount rather than all the pomp and show. Sure, Tamil weddings are filled with lots of fun and light moments as well as they are eventful with distant relatives in attendance. There, for sure, won’t be any compromise on the actual ceremony. Tamil weddings, also known as Kalyanam, are usually one-day ceremony. Before the day of marriage, there will be a formal engagement.
The actual wedding ceremony itself is hugely traditional, filled with religious acts and deeper philosophical meaning, and is maintained by the priest who chants mainly in Sanskrit. It lasts about 5 hours, includes snacks and drinks throughout the duration as well as a grand vegetarian meal for all the guests at the end. Thus, a Kalyanam is a beautiful mixture of tradition, culture and happiness.
Wedding is the most auspicious occasion, bringing two souls closer. I love to frame the happiest moments of their lives. Picture is worth a thousand words or more than that. I create some memories for them to cherish throughout their lifetime. My effort was to tell the soulful charming story in every frame, especially on the wedding day when there were multiple other camera crews present.
